FAQ · FIVE QUESTIONS WE HEAR MOST

Quick answers, then phone or visit for the rest.

How does Legal Aid work, and will I qualify?

Legal Aid is means-tested for most criminal work and depends on income, dependants and the seriousness of the offence. Goldstones holds a Criminal Legal Aid contract with the Legal Aid Agency, so we can take on duty-solicitor work at the police station at no charge to you. For court work, we tell you on day one whether you are likely to qualify, and if you are not, we quote the work privately at fixed stages. No hourly billing surprises.

If I am arrested at night, who do I call?

The out-of-hours number 07623 929802 answers 24 hours a day, every day of the year. A duty solicitor from the firm attends the police station, sits in on the interview, and advises before, during and after. If you cannot get hold of us, ask the custody sergeant to ring Goldstones, they have the number.

Will the same solicitor stay with me through the whole case?

In most criminal matters, yes. The solicitor who attends your first police-station interview is the solicitor who takes you through magistrates and (where applicable) Crown Court. Where a hearing clashes the firm covers internally, so your file does not move to an external barrister you have never met.

How does conveyancing work in Wales, and how long does a Welsh transaction take?

For a Welsh property purchase you pay Welsh Land Transaction Tax (LTT, not English SDLT). Goldstones handles LTT and the Welsh searches inline. A straightforward Welsh residential purchase typically takes 8 to 12 weeks from instruction to completion, depending on chain length, mortgage offer, and how quickly the seller returns enquiries. Lenders look for CQS accreditation before releasing funds, which is one of the reasons we hold it.

Do I need to come to Walter Road in person to make a will?

Not always. A first will appointment can be done by phone or video call, with the formal signing handled at 9-10 Walter Road or, where mobility is an issue, at home. Two independent witnesses must be present at the signing, and we arrange that as part of the appointment.
